Here is an interesting fact that I found while researching
pertinent information about Julia Child, she disliked cilantro, in fact she
detested it so much that she did not use it in any of her recipes and did
not allow the herb in her house. When she first declared that cilantro had
the taste of soap, many of her fans thought she was being amusing but the
truth is that what she experienced has now been proven to be genetic in
nature.
Individuals who perceive a soapy taste when they eat certain
foods have particular olfactory-receptor genes that cause them to taste
soap when
they eat specific foods such as cilantro leaves. It is a scientific fact
that if you perceive this soapy taste when you eat cilantro, carrots or
Brussels sprouts, your taste buds will never change; you will have this
sensation for your lifetime. The medical name is dysgeusia, more commonly
known as papageusia, and causes no reason for alarm unless other symptoms
exist.
There is one famous chef and lover of fantastic food who
descends from movie-star royalty, Giada De Laurentis is her name and over
the years she
has hosted numerous cooking shows and specials on such channels as the Food
Network. Her maternal grandfather was Dino De Laurentis, who
was a famous movie producer. Additionally, her mother,
Veronica De Laurentis, was an Italian actress and her
father, Alex De Benedetti, was
an actor and movie producer. After her parents divorced, Giada took her
mother's last name, and relocated with her to California.
Giada enjoys entertaining and various episodes of her shows
highlight her preparing for guests with delicious food and theme parties
for adults and children. She was the owner of a catering business and
she and her former husband Todd are the parents of daughter Jade Marie, who
is frequently featured on these episodes. She has been romantically linked
with Bobby Flay and they remain close friends.
Giada Pamela graded from Marymount High School in Los Angeles
and earned a bachelor’s degree in social anthropology in 1996 from the
University of California. Giada studied at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, France
with aspirations of becoming a pastry chef but decided to come to the States
and work as a professional chef with Wolfgang Puck at his restaurant, Spago
in Los Angeles.
Giada opened several restaurants on the strip in Las Vegas
and one near Washington, D.C., all of them located in or near casinos.
“Her Food Network shows have earned the star several Daytime Emmy
Awards, and her cookbooks have landed her on The New York Times best
seller list”. She currently has five cookbooks in print and
appears frequently on her own shows on Food Network and makes guest appearances
in too many cooking specials to name.
It is interesting to know what famous chefs refuse to eat and
for Giada it is coconut and green peppers. She does
not use either ingredient
in any of her cooking shows or her private life.
